DCI apologizes for circulating pastor’s photo as one of goons looting businesses

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been forced to apologise to a Kenyan pastor after erroneously placing him on the list of wanted suspects.

On Wednesday, July 3 morning, the investigative agency published photos of suspects who carried out unlawful activities during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations.

“We therefore advise them to report to the nearest police station for further police action,” the DCI had instructed,

One of those suspects in the list was Dennis Basweti, who the DCI later discovered that was mistakenly added to the list.

The DCI says that just as instructed, Mr Basweti surrendered himself at DCI offices and recorded a statement indicating that his circulated photos as having occupied parliament during the protests period had been taken earlier on June 10, 2024, where he had visited upon the invitation of his MP, Silvanus Osoro.

“The DCI has since confirmed that Mr Dennis Basweti’s narrative is true, and has reached out to him with an apology, further commending him for believing in the DCI’s pledge to conducting investigations thoroughly and fairly,” the DCI says.

South Mugirango MP Osoro confirmed that indeed Basweti N Dennis visited him in Parliament a month ago.

“I took him on a round tour of chambers as he took selfies and videos with excitement. He posted them on his Facebook page on the 10th June 2024. During the protests, the excited netizens downloaded the said photos/videos with hashtags ‘tumefika bunge’,” Osoro said.

He added: “The police might have thought it as a recent video taken during protests. He has just appeared before the DCI and ofcourse he will be cleared. If you have done NOTHING WRONG, do not fear the police. Just appear and explain yourself. Kuko hivo wadau…”
