DCI distances itself from Davido April Fool’s prank gone wrong

The DCI Kenya has distanced itself from a prank gone wrong after a Kenyan news outlet alleged that Grammy-nominated Nigerian Artist Davido was arrested over drug possession.

According to the now pulled-down post, the story alleged that cocaine worth Ksh18 million was found in Davido’s private jet.

Additionally, the artist’s jet was in JKIA where the story alleges that the artist was detained pending investigation.

Ironically, the story was later pulled down and termed an April Fools prank gone wrong.

Davido was among other global artists who made appearances in Nairobi and performed at the coveted Raha festival.

DCI Kenya distances itself from Davido prank

The office of the Director of Criminal Investigation has distanced itself from the April Fools prank that went wrong and may potentially turn bitter soon.

DCI Kenya posted online on its X account terming the story as “Fake News” on its X media handle.

Additionally, the DCI has pinned the story at the top of its feed utilizing the hashtag #FakeNews.

According to insight from TV47, it is not clear whether the story was meant to serve as an April Fool’s prank or not.

Furthermore, according to TV47’s fact-checking desk, the story was originally posted by the Kenyan news outlet in question at 11:31 am on 1 April 2024.

Nevertheless, according to TV47 fact checkers, the intent of the story is unclear due to the severity of the allegations published.

In a twist of events, the news outlet in question has since responded to DCI Kenya claiming that it was the DCI that got fooled instead.

In a statement, the news outlet shared that Davido was never detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport over cocaine possession.

The statement went on to share “Kenyans are happy with him after he showcased his excellent skills in Nairobi

Davido’s April Fool’s story picked up

Citizens online picked up the story on the alleged arrest of the Nigerian artist after his electrifying performance in Nairobi.

According to TV47 Fact-checkers, the story was picked by different global news sites with discussions going on via social media platforms such as Reddit.

The story has appeared believable as it has been shared across websites in Kenya and across Africa.

With DCI Kenya confirming that the story is indeed fake, it is unclear at this point whether Davido will take legal action.
