The DCI welcomes the conviction and subsequent sentencing of three suspects of terrorism who were yesterday sent to Kamiti Maximum Security Prison after six years of trial at the Milimani Law Courts.
Abdimajit Hassan Adan and Mohamed Osman Nane who were found culpable of involvement in the February 15, 2018, thwarted terrorist attack that targeted Kenya’s capital will serve 19 years in the nick after 6 years of the mandatory sentences were commuted.
The 3rd suspect, Lydia Nyawira Mburu who was found guilty of forging national identity cards for known terrorists was sentenced to three years in prison.
A total of 16 counts had been preferred against the accused persons, two of whom were acquitted after the full hearing.
In the case heard and determined by the Senior Principal Magistrate Court no. 8 Hon. Zainab Abdul, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) containing high explosive projectiles including pipe bombs concealed at the dashboard of a Mitsubishi Outlander, five AK47 rifles, 36 loaded magazines among others were intercepted in Isiolo county.
Anti-terrorism detectives who had been trailing Abdimajit for a year after returning to the country from Somalia where he had fled and joined al-Shabaab, successfully intercepted the VBIED but not without a gunfight that left one of the bombers dead.
Two others narrowly escaped. Abdimajit who was waiting for his accomplices at Merti in Isiolo was also cornered and arrested, before being charged alongside his accomplices.
