DCI: Why we arrested Alfred Keter

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has refuted claims that authorities abducted former MP Alfred Keter.

The investigative agency instead says that Keter was arrested on Sunday, June 30 for conspiracy to traffic firearms and incitement to violence.

“He was booked at Kamukunji Police Station and later released pending Forensic Analysis of exhibits,” the DCI says.

The agency further says that after the forensic analysis, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for direction.

Ununiformed men forcefully pulling former MP Alfred Keter out of his car in broad daylight as members of the public watched in dismay.

The National Police Service has since urged members of the public to refrain from acts of violence, hate speech and malice for sustained peace and security in the country.

Keter was in the company of his family — wife and children — in a Land Cruiser V8, when a Ford Ranger double cabin vehicle blocked his car along Nyeri Road in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area.

Ununiformed men then forcefully pulled the former lawmaker out of his car in broad daylight as members of the public watched in dismay. Not even the screams from his family could deter the men, who authorities now say they were police officers.

The bundled Keter into the pickup before driving away.

Speaking after his release, Keter said that the government was after him after being vocal against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

“Don’t use intimidation to try to silence us so that you perpetuate whatever you want to do with that finance bill,” he said.
