Death toll in Moyale attack rises to 8

The death toll from a shooting incident at the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Moyale, Marsabit County rose to 8 after one more victim succumbed to injuries.

According to the police report, only two of the 10 people who were on board the lorry that was targeted in the Monday August 12, 2024 night attack survived.

The incident happened at Elledimtu along Forolle-Turbi Road in Moyale when an unknown number of assailants attacked a lorry that was transporting food items from Nairobi to Dukana.

Leaders from the region, including Marsabit Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali have condemned the attack.

According to the Marsabit governor, eight out of the ten passengers aboard the vehicle were shot dead and their bodies were burnt. 

One of the survivors escaped with severe injuries while another one, who was a minor, escaped unhurt.

“On behalf of the people of Marsabit, we the leaders, condemn these heinous acts with the strongest terms possible, as we condole with the families, friends and relatives of the deceased,” said the governor.

Police reported that the lorry burst into flames where 80 bags of 100kg maize, 60 iron sheets, 5 (200 litres) diesel, 3 by 2 timber, and other assorted goods of unknown value were reduced to ashes. 

In addition, DCI detectives recovered 157 spent cartridges of 7.62 mm bullets from the scene of the incident.

The incident comes a day after two foreigners were reported missing after they were kidnapped on Monday night in the area.

A similar incident occurred on August 9 2024, along the border of Kenya and Ethiopia at Golole, where a bulldozer belonging to Ethiopia was burnt by unknown people.

Meanwhile, leaders from the region urged the national government through the Ministry of Interior, to stop terror attacks and restore peace in the affected counties in the North Eastern region.
