EACC releases details of police officers arrested for collecting bribes

A police officer assigned to a roundabout in Nairobi faces potential job loss after being arrested over bribery allegations.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) announced in a Gazette Notice on Friday August 9, 2024 that the offense occurred in January 2023.

The Commission disclosed that it had received a public complaint alleging that police officers had enlisted a civilian to collect bribes on their behalf.

At that time, the officers were stationed near the flyover from Muthurwa towards the Country Bus Station in Nairobi, at the junction leading from Gikomba.

On January 13th and 17th, 2023, the investigation team conducted surveillance at Echo Roundabout and recorded video footage of the suspects seemingly accepting bribes from public service vehicles,” stated a notice signed by EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak.

Shortly thereafter, one of the officers was arrested along with the civilian suspected of collecting bribes on his behalf.

However, the investigation concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support bribery charges against the suspects.

The notice further stated that on June 3, 2024, a report was compiled and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), recommending that the National Police Service Commission take administrative action against the suspect.

On July 24, 2024, the DPP returned the inquiry file to the EACC, also advising administrative action.

This case was listed among several other bribery incidents involving police officers.

In a separate incident, a police officer stationed at Kasarani police station demanded a Ksh30,000 bribe to release two individuals from police custody in June this year.

The investigation revealed that the suspect requested and received a KSh10,000 bribe. When the arrest was attempted, the suspect resisted and caused damage to property at Red Plate Restaurant.

Following this, the EACC recommended to the DPP that the suspect be charged with two counts of receiving a bribe and one count of obstruction.

The ODPP agreed with this recommendation.

In a separate case, a police officer assigned to the Kisumu County Criminal Investigation Office allegedly demanded a KSh500,000 bribe to drop charges against a suspect accused of stealing goods in transit.

The suspect accepted a bribe of Ksh200,000, and the EACC forwarded the case file to the ODPP on June 13 of this year.

However, the file was sent back to the EACC for further investigation.
