President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Monday, February 26 met with Uganda President Yoweri Museveni at the latter’s rural home in Kisozi.
The trio discussed critical issues that affect Kenya and Uganda such as energy and petroleum.
The meeting comes amidst insistence by Uganda on striking a deal that will see the landlocked country import its fuel through the Port of Tanga, instead of the Port of Mombasa.
Initially, Uganda had announced its intention to import its fuel products through the Port of Dar es Salaam, after Kenya refused to grant it tax concessions to use its pipeline.
Last week, it emerged that Uganda had already started talks with Tanzania over the same, sending Kenyan oil dealers into panic mode.
In what stakeholders in Kenya thought to be a bluff by Uganda, the talks entail Uganda importing its fuel through Tanga Port, which is closer to Kampala.
President Ruto disclosed that the candidacy of Raila for the African Union (AU) Commission chairmanship was also discussed during the meeting.
Raila, two weeks ago, declared that he will be vying for the top AU job, starting a shuttle diplomacy to woe heads of states in his favour.
After the meeting, President Ruto said that Kenya and Uganda are committed to the deepening of the long-established diplomatic and economic ties between our two countries.
“This relationship includes bringing all the seven East African Community nations closer in their ultimate goal to form the East African Political Federation,” Ruto said.
