Mohamed Abduba Dida who was first thrusted into the limelight in 2013 when he fronted himself for the presidency going head to head against Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta is currently a convict in the US.
The former teacher has been serving a seven year sentence since November 18, 2022 for the crime of stalking and intimidating an unidentified person residing in the US.
It is uncertain whether Dida had relocated to the US or was just on a visit when he was arrested for these crimes. The offences were committed in Mclean County in Illnois.
During the trial, Dida was facing two charges: stalking and transmitting threats and the second charge aggravated stalking and violation of a restraining order against the victim.
He was sentenced to two years in prison for the first offense and seven years in prison for the second offense.
The former presidential candidate is set to be released from prison in April 3, 2029.
Dida’s political career
Dida joined the presidential race in the last lap in 2013. He announced his candidature barely a month to the general election. His runningmate was Joshua Odongo.
During campaigns, Dida likened himself to Bibilical David. “Kenya is too small for me gentlemen. I can man the five continents, and I have the potential and sincerity… I came late, nimekuja mwisho na nitarusha tu moja na itaisha,” he said once in a Citizen TV interview.
He finished fifth with 54,840 votes, defeating astute politicians, Martha Karua (43,881 votes) and Paul Muite (12,580 votes). Dida did not despair however, he gave the presidency another shot in 2017.
He changed his running mate to Titus Ngetuny. He finished fourth with 38,004 votes and defeated Cyrus Jirongo.
