Didier Deschamps to step down as France Coach after 2026 World Cup

Didier Deschamps, the long-serving head coach of the French men’s national football team, has announced that he will step down from his role following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 56-year-old took charge of the team in 2012, succeeding his former teammate Laurent Blanc, and has been at the helm for over a decade. Although his contract was set to extend through 2026, Deschamps has decided it’s time for new leadership.

A Legacy of Success

Deschamps’ tenure has been marked by remarkable achievements:

  • 2018 World Cup Champion
  • 2021 Nations League Winner
  • Runner-up in the 2016 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup
  • Semifinalist in the 2024 European Championship

As a player, Deschamps also enjoyed tremendous success, captaining France to victory in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

With a 64.2% success rate, he is the longest-serving coach of the national team, having guided Les Bleus to the semifinals in the last four major tournaments.

Deschamps Reflects on His Decision

“In 2026, it will be over. In my head, it’s very clear,” Deschamps said in an interview.

“I’ve done my time, with the same desire and passion to maintain France at the highest level. But 2026 is the right time to stop. One has to be able to say stop there’s life after this. The most important thing is for France to remain at the top, as they have been for many years.”

Who Will Replace Deschamps?

Zinedine Zidane, 52, is widely regarded as the favorite to succeed Deschamps. A former teammate of Deschamps on the national team, Zidane has an illustrious managerial record, including winning three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid. His experience and stature make him a strong contender to lead Les Bleus into a new era.
