Didmus Barasa asks Victor Wanyama to return to Harambee Stars

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has publicly called on Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat to “unequivocally” reinstate former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama to the Kenya national football team. Barasa, who serves as the chairman and a member of the Sports Committee in the Kenya Parliament, believes Wanyama’s return would significantly bolster the already exceptional talent within the team.

Barasa’s call comes on the basis that Wanyama, despite having previously retired from international duty, continues to play at a competitive level with CF Montreal in Major League Soccer (MLS) in Canada. The lawmaker emphasized that Wanyama’s experience and skill set would be invaluable to the Harambee Stars, especially as they aim to strengthen their squad for upcoming tournaments.

In 2023, Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat revealed that upon inquiry, Wanyama had not yet made up his mind about making a comeback to international football. Barasa’s appeal adds public pressure on both the coach and the player to consider the possibility of Wanyama’s return, which could inspire and elevate the national team’s performance on the international stage.

Barasa’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among Kenyan football fans and officials who are eager to see one of the country’s most accomplished players don the national colors once again.

Victor Wanyama announced his retirement from the Kenya national football team in September 2021. The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder stated that after extensive consideration, he decided it was time to “hand over the team to the next generation so that they too can make their mark and help our country even reach greater heights.”

Wanyama, known for his leadership and commanding presence in midfield, played a pivotal role in the national team for many years. His decision to step back from international duty was driven by a desire to create opportunities for younger players to step up and continue the team’s progress.

During his tenure, Wanyama captained the Harambee Stars and was instrumental in helping Kenya qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, ending a 15-year absence from the tournament. His retirement was seen as a significant moment in Kenyan football, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s most iconic players.

Wanyama continues to play professionally for CF Montreal in Major League Soccer (MLS), where his experience and skill continue to make an impact on the field.
