Distilling company calls on IPOA to investigate Police officer accused of vandalism

National NewsNews

Patiala Distillers K Limited, the manufacturer of Fly Horse Gin and Diamond Ice Ready To Drink that were destroyed by Nyeri residents now say that it will sue the two legislator Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi and Nyeri Senator, Wamatinga for malicious damage to property.

The two lawmakers led residents to storm the offices of DCC Mathira East where they destroyed products of Patiala Distillers K Limited valued at Ksh6 million.

Through lawyer Danstan Omari, Patiala has defended its products saying that they are good for human consumption and meet all standard requirements by regulators such as KEBS and KRA.

“It was an unfortunate occurrence by officers who are expected to enforce the law and not use the same law to abuse, intimidate, and harass our client’s lawful distributor,” read part of a statement from Patiala.

In a letter addressed to IPOA ,the company says the events of 26th February 2024 at the DCC Mathira East were lawless and unwarranted.

“We kindly implore your urgent intervention in this matter and request that you launch a thorough investigation into the conduct of all the police officers involved in matters relating to our client and take appropriate action against them,” the letter reads.

Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has since suspended the manufacture of the two Patiala products saying that it has received complaints.

A move that the company says it’s in bad faith since all their products meet the prescribed standards.
