Doctors issue 7 day nationwide strike starting Sunday

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has issued a 7 day nationwide strike notice.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on March 4, 2024, KMPDU deputy secretary general Dr. Dennis Miskellah said the strike will start on Sunday March 10.

Miskellah explained that the strike was meant to take place in June 2024 but was pushed forward.

The doctors have given the government until Sunday midnight to resolve all pending issues failure to which they will proceed with the strike.

The notice was issued as doctors marched outside the Ministry of Health headquarters in Nairobi on Monday March 4, 2024.

“We are going to give a seven-day notice today then we will do our nationwide strike to ensure that every single issue we have fought for from promotions to medical cover, internship, pension, study leaves and school fees and issues around the SG must be addressed,” he said.

The Union emphasized the need to address various critical issues, including the posting of interns, promotions, medical cover, reimbursement of postgraduate fees, provision of study leaves and pension.

This was after the National Advisory Committee Council reached a decision on the matter after a meeting held on Sunday March 3, 2024.

He mentioned that among the concerns was the injury sustained by SG Davji Atellah during the protests held last Thursday.

“We met as the National Advisory Committee Council and we have agreed to do our nationwide strike starting Sunday next week,” Miskellah said.

“There has also been a push and pull between the unions and the government on the posting of interns whom they (unions) claim are wasting away and languishing at home,” he added.
