Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, has publicly acknowledged an affair during his first marriage.
Revealing a deeply personal chapter of his life.
In a statement shared with CNN, Emhoff expressed regret over his past actions and reflected on how his family emerged stronger from those challenging times.
“During my first marriage, Kerstin and I faced difficult moments because of my actions,” Emhoff stated.
“I took responsibility, and over the years, we worked through it as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.”
This candid admission comes after a British tabloid reported that Emhoff had a relationship with one of his young daughter’s teachers, leading to the dissolution of his first marriage.
The relationship, which ended long before Emhoff began dating Kamla Harris, was already known to Joe Biden’s vetting committee when Harris was being considered for the vice-presidential role.
Emhoff had also been transparent with Harris about the affair well before their marriage.
Kerstin Emhoff, Doug’s first wife, addressed the matter in her statement, explaining that their decision to end the marriage was based on various reasons.
She praised Doug for being a great father and highlighted the supportive blended family they have built together with Harris.
“Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons many years ago,” she said.
“He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me, and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together.”
Beautiful blended family
Over the years, the family dynamic has evolved into a positive and friendly one, with Kerstin often speaking warmly about Harris as a stepmother.
She has defended Harris against public criticism, calling her “loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present.”
Doug Emhoff and Kamala Harris married in 2014, five years after the end of his first marriage.
Since then, Emhoff has become a significant supporter and private adviser to Harris, often expressing his pride in her achievements.
Despite the past, he remains committed to supporting his wife as she leads the country into the future.
