Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is among leaders attending President Cyril Ramaphosa’s swearing in ceremony today in Pretoria, South Africa.
Ramaphosa is to be sworn in as president of South Africa, following his re-election in a hotly contested presidential election in the country.
The swearing in ceremony in Pretoria on Wednesday June 19, 2024, comes after Ramaphosa’s African National Congress (ANC) struck a coalition government deal.
This is after Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to re-elect the 71-year-old Ramaphosa last week, after a May 29, 2024 general election produced no outright winner.
“It will once again be a privilege and a pleasure to once again service this nation,” Ramaphosa told parliament.
He will be sworn in for a second five-year term at the Union Buildings in the presence of MPs, foreign dignitaries, invited Heads of State, religious and traditional leaders.
Approximately 20 Heads of State and government are expected to attend the swearing in ceremony.
During the ceremony, there will be a 21-gun salute, military choppers flying by the venue, as well as music entertainment.
The ceremony will be presided over by the head of the constitutional court, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, after which President Ramaphosa will deliver an inaugural address.
