DP Gachagua ‘irked’ by leaders who used President Ruto’s podium at Uhuru Park function

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday, September 25 noted a “serious” breach of protocol during a state function at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

During the function, President William Ruto was flagging off the Community Health Promoters (CHPs) kits to counties when the ‘breach’ occurred.

Several leaders had used the State podium prepared at Uhuru Park to give their speech, something that ‘irked’ the second in command.

President Ruto had invited different leaders present at Uhuru Park to give their speech from the presidential podium.

Stickler of law, procedures

Describing himself as a stickler for rule of law and procedures, DP Gachagua declined to use the podium. He, however, excused those who had used it since it was President Ruto himself who had invited them to the podium to speak.

Some of the leaders who had breached protocol and used the presidential podium include Health CS Susan Nakhumicha, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Council of Governors Chairperson Anne Waiguru, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, Senator Jackson Mandago and Kwanza MP Robert Pukose.

“I have chosen to speak from here because there has been a serious breach of protocol. The state podium is reserved for the Head of State but I want to exonerate all those who have spoken there because it is the President himself who invited them to speak from there and breached protocol,” Gachagua said.
