DPP orders arrest of man who assaulted medical staff at Port Victoria Hospital

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered the arrest of male suspect who was in the company of Vanessa Ogema,  the lady who assaulted medical staff at Port Victoria Hospital, Busia County. 

In a press statement released on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, the DPP noted that there was sufficient evidence to charge the male suspect in court.

“The ODPP has directed that, a second male suspect who was in the company of the accused person and was captured in the video be identified, apprehended and charged alongside the accused person already charged in court,” DPP noted.

This was after the incident that occurred on January 1, 2024 was captured in a video that circulated on social media showing the two harassing medical staff at Port Victoria Hospital.

The DPP had directed the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incident that was reported at Port Victoria Police Station.

Meanwhile, the main suspect Vanessa Ogema surrendered to the police at the Port Victoria police station on January 7, 2024.

She was interrogated by the police officers before she was arraigned at the Port Victoria Magistrate’s Court on January 8, 2024.

Vanessa was charged with assault and causing bodily harm contrary to section 251, creating disturbance contrary to section 95 (1)(b), malicious damage to property contrary to section 339 (1) and threat of injury to persons employed in the public service contrary to Section 106.

She pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was released on a bond of Ksh200,000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The case filed in court will be mentioned on January 17, 2024 for further directions and setting date for hearing.
