DPP secures extradition of Kevin Kang’ethe to be charged with murder in the US

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has secured extradition of Kevin Kang’ethe to the United States of America to face murder charges.

Kang’etehe will appear at Suffolk Superior Court in Boston on Tuesday September 3, 2024 over the killing of his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu.

In a statement on Monday September 2, 2024, the DPP noted that Kang’ethe left Nairobi on September 1, 2024.

“Kang’ethe left Nairobi on September 1, 2024 and is set to face the charge of murder at Suffolk Superior Court in Pemberton Square, Boston on September 3. 2024,” stated the DPP.

The suspect flew to Kenya in 2023 after allegedly killing Margaret Mbitu, and was on the run until he was apprehended by Kenyan authorities to face the law.

He was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina who subsequently ruled that he be extradited.

“I wish to reiterate my commitment and support whenever needed to the United States of America and in particular the prosecution team as they proceed with the next phase of the case,” said Mr. Remson Ingonga.

“To the family of the Late Margaret Mbita, we offer our support and prayers,” he added.

The extradition comes after Ingonga assured Federal Bureau Investigations (FBI) Director Christopher Wray during talks in Nairobi in June 2004 that his office was keen to ensure justice involving this case is done in an expeditious manner.

Kevin Kang’ethe was being held at Muthaiga Police Station but escaped custody on February 7, at about 7:30 pm, reportedly fleeing in a waiting matatu.

His escape was confirmed by Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei who visited the station, and ordered the arrest of the four officers who were on duty when the escape occurred.

Kangethe was re-arrested exactly a week after his daring escape in Ngong town, Kajiado County.
