Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called for an immediate investigations into an incident where an MCA was physically assaulted by county enforcement officers (‘kanjo’ askaris) outside Machakos Law Courts.
In the incident that occurred Wednesday, January 31, the enforcement officers attempted to unsuccessfully arrest Kalama Ward MCA Boniface Maeke.
After Maeke resisted, a scuffle ensued and at some point he was stripped, before members of the public and his fellow MCAs intervened.
In a statement to newsrooms, Governor Ndeti condemned the humiliating treatment meted on the MCA, reiterating her administration’s commitment to adhere to the rule of law and respect to the rights of all persons, including leaders.
“In light of the above, I have forthwith directed the County Secretary and Head of Public Service to, with immediate effect, institute investigations on the uncalled for humiliation of Members of the County Assembly culminating in appropriate administrative action(s) against persons who may be culpable,” Governor Ndeti said in the statement.
She added: “I expect a report to be forwarded to my office within 7 days from today.”
She has further called upon county enforcement officers to go about their work in strict conformity of the law and procedures, with respect to the rights of all residents.
Machakos County Speaker Anne Kiusya has also expressed concerns and condemned the manner in which the MCA was treated.
“Such actions not only undermine the principles of democracy and the values that form the bedrock of our society, but also pose a threat to the rule of law,” the speaker says.
