Chaos erupted at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday April 8, 2025, after a physical altercation between two female legislators—Nominated MP Umulkheir Harun (ODM) and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Falhada Iman—was caught on camera.
In the video, the two leaders are seen exchanging harsh words before lunging at each other, forcing nearby MPs—mostly women—to intervene. Despite their efforts, the scuffle escalated, prompting one MP to shout, “Can someone help separate them?” as others pleaded with onlookers to stop filming.
Security officials, including the Sergeant-at-Arms, quickly moved in and successfully broke up the confrontation. However, the verbal exchange continued even after the MPs were physically separated.
The cause of the altercation remains unclear, but it has raised concerns about decorum within legislative institutions.
Speaking after the incident, Umulkheir expressed regret and confirmed she had reported the matter to relevant authorities.
“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds—a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother,” she stated.
While refraining from giving details, she maintained that her actions do not reflect her principles.
“I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to emphasize that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct,” she said.
Umulkheir called for professionalism and mutual respect within the political space.
“The political landscape is inherently challenging, but there is never justification for behaviour that undermines the integrity of our work,” she added.
Efforts to get a statement from MP Falhada Iman were unsuccessful by press time.
The altercation has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans calling for disciplinary action and others questioning the rising tension within Parliament.
As investigations proceed, parliamentary leadership is yet to issue an official statement. The incident has ignited a national conversation about conflict resolution and the conduct expected of public servants.
