Driver of bus that killed 15 people along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway freed on Ksh 1M bond

Molo Principal Magistrate Daisy Mosse on Thursday, freed, Clement Kiarie, the driver of an ill-fated bus that was involved in an accident at Twin Bridge area on Tuesday, January 7, on a Ksh 1 million bond.

Kiarie was charged with 15 counts of causing death, 1 count of contravening the use of insurance, 1 charge of reckless driving and one other charge of carrying 41 uninsured passengers

The driver however denied all the charges and was freed

The Magistrate also allowed the defendant to seek medical attention as he was among those injured in the January 7th accident.

The matter will be mentioned on January 29, 2024. 

Kiarie was arrested on Wednesday and detention at the Mau Summit Police Station. 

Detectives handling the matter informed the press that through a joint investigation with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials, law enforcement officers were able to trace the suspect through his mobile records to Mau Summit Town, some metres away from the accident scene.

“An investigation has commenced to establish the full circumstances leading to this crash to inform prosecution and recommendations,” said the detectives.

According to preliminary investigations the 34 -year-old driver was trying to overtake another vehicle and ended up colliding with an oncoming matatu.
