A heartbreaking incident has shaken a small town Ndola, in Zambia.
A one-year-six-month-old baby was found dead beneath the intoxicated mother.
The woman, Matilda Phiri, has been detained for manslaughter following the tragic discovery made by her husband, Harrison Mumba.
According to Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba, the incident occurred on January 28 at around 10:30 p.m.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Matilda had been drinking heavily for months, a habit that may have led to the devastating loss of her child.
Harrison, her husband, who had been moving items from his shop into their home, sensed something was wrong when he entered their dark bedroom.
Using his torch, he saw his wife lying motionless on the bed.
As he stepped closer, he was horrified to find their baby, Harrison Junior, pinned beneath her.
Panicked, Mumba quickly pushed his wife aside, only to realize that his son was unresponsive.
A white substance was coming out of the child’s nostrils, a chilling sign that something was terribly wrong.
He desperately tried to wake his wife, but she was too intoxicated to respond.
After persistent efforts, she finally stirred, and Harrison explained the dire situation.
Rushing to Mapalo Clinic, the distraught parents hoped for a miracle.
Medical personnel advised them to proceed to Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital, but upon arrival, doctors confirmed their worst fear—the child was already dead.
Following hospital protocol, the infant’s body was placed in the mortuary pending further examination and burial arrangements.
Police later detained Matilda at Mapalo Police Post, charging her with manslaughter.
As authorities continue their investigations, many are left grappling with the devastating reality of a life lost too soon.
