Kenya sevens finished 10th in the first round of the 2024/2025 World rugby sevens series- Dubai 7s after suffering a 15-07 loss to Uruguay in the 9th place finals played on Sunday December 1, 2024 the sevens stadium.
Uruguay were first to score through Ignacio Facciolo before Vinals Mateo added another try bringing the scores to 10-00 at the break in favour of Uruguay.
Uruguay continued with their dominance in the second half this time Tomas Etcheverry capitalising on Shujaa’s mistakes to extend their lead to 15-00.
Samuel Asati made no mistakes in converting Kenya’s first try scored by Captain George Ooro but this was not enough as Uruguay held on for a 15-07 win at full-time.
The loss meant that Shujaa managed only two wins and had three losses in Dubai where in their first match they suffered a narrow 24-19 loss to France before recovering in the second match where they bagged a 22-17 victory over South Africa and lost 31-14 to Australia in their final pool game.
The loss to Australia sent Shujaa to the ninth-place semifinals, where they beat Ireland 21-7 before losing to Uruguay in the ninth-place finals.
Shujaa who are now ranked 10th after Dubai 7s, shift their focus to the Cape Town 7s, set for next weekend at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in South Africa.
Shujaa have been placed in pool B of the Cape town 7s where they will compete against Spain and Australia.
