Dutch national jailed 10 years for child exploitation in Kenya

A 73-year-old Dutch national, Jan IN’T Veld, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined Ksh. 3 million after being convicted on 10 counts related to child exploitation.

The charges include child pornography, sexual communication with a child, committing an indecent act with a child, and child abuse.

The Milimani Children’s Court in Kenya delivered the verdict, also ordering him to pay Ksh. 3 million in restitution to his victims, which takes priority over the fines.

Known by aliases such as “Teacher Jan,” “Dad,” and “Mzungu,” IN’T Veld was found guilty of six counts of child pornography, two counts of sexual communication with a child, one count of an indecent act with a child, and one count of child abuse. These offenses occurred between April 2022 and November 2023.

The court established that IN’T Veld deliberately exposed a 17-year-old minor, identified as G.S., to obscene audiovisual materials via WhatsApp.

His intent was to encourage the minor to engage in sexual acts. Evidence also revealed that he received explicit images of two younger minors—A.A., aged 10, and A.B., aged 7—through WhatsApp for his own gratification.

Further findings showed that IN’T Veld engaged in sexually explicit conversations with G.S., who was 16 at the time, urging the minor to respond in a sexual manner.

The court also confirmed that he indecently touched G.S.’s private parts, abusing him on the same bed where the minor’s mother—IN’T Veld’s partner—lay.

Hon. Dr. Alice Macharia, presiding over the case, stated, “Having observed the accused and all witnesses, especially PW3, who testified with deep hurt, this court finds the prosecution’s evidence overwhelming.

Each of the 10 counts has been proven beyond reasonable doubt, both individually and collectively.” The judge highlighted that IN’T Veld instructed PW3 to engage in sexual acts with underage girls and to send him nude photos and videos of those acts.

The prosecution, led by Linda Ndambiri and Victor Preston Owuor, presented nine witnesses to build a solid case. After serving his sentence, IN’T Veld faces deportation from Kenya.
