EACC probes University of Nairobi over alleged irregular leasing of land

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched an investigation into allegations of irregular and unlawful leasing of land owned by the University of Nairobi.

In a letter dated April 2, 2025, addressed to Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, the Acting Vice Chancellor and Secretary to the University Council, the EACC has requested documentation and information regarding several parcels of land allegedly leased out under questionable circumstances.

The commission is scrutinizing multiple properties owned by the University of Nairobi, including 10 acres in Kanyariri farm, 40 acres behind ANP hostels, 100 acres in Kibwezi field station, 20 acres leased to Shamba Cafe Hotel, and 6 acres near Dusit Hotel.

Additionally, the investigation covers the Spring Valley property near a shopping center, as well as residential houses along Ngong Road, Arboretum Drive, and in Lavington.

To facilitate the investigation, the EACC has requested the university to urgently provide lease or tenancy agreements for the parcels in question, minutes from meetings approving these leases or tenancies, and correspondence between the university and lessees regarding these properties. The commission has also requested records of any changes in land use or ownership, if applicable, along with any other relevant documents or information.

Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, the EACC has set a deadline of Monday, April 7, 2025, at 10:30 AM for the university to submit all requested materials. EACC officers M. Wambeti and E. Rono have been assigned to receive the documents and information from university officials.

This investigation highlights growing concerns over transparency and accountability in public institutions managing valuable assets such as land. As one of Kenya’s leading educational institutions, the University of Nairobi is expected to uphold high standards of governance in its operations. The outcome of this probe could have significant implications for both the university’s administration and its reputation as a public institution.

As investigations proceed, all eyes will be on how the university responds to these allegations and whether it can provide satisfactory explanations for the leasing arrangements under scrutiny. The EACC has reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring accountability in public institutions under its slogan: “Tuangamize Ufisadi, Tujenge Kenya” (Eradicate Corruption, Build Kenya).
