EACC: Taita Taveta MCAs in hot soup for defrauding taxpayers Ksh 7M

National NewsNews

In the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission EACC 4th Quarterly Report published on Friday, 2 out of the 24 files recommending prosecution of suspects relate to the County Government of Taita Taveta where the County Assembly leadership and MCAs defrauded the taxpayer by undertaking a bonding and merry-making trip to Zanzibar on public funds amounting to over Kes.7M.

Some MCAs were overpaid while others who received allowances for the journey did not travel. In the second case, Senior County Executive Officials embezzled over Kes.4M in purported celebrations for World War I. Besides the prosecution of suspects, EACC will pursue recovery of the lost funds.

Meanwhile A former Governor and one of his wives, a serving Member of Parliament, and his two daughters are among the suspects recommended for prosecution in the latest EACC Quarterly Report published in the Kenya Gazette on Friday.

The two family graft cases are in addition to numerous others under investigation by EACC, review by the ODPP, and/or prosecution in court where state officials have used their spouses, children, siblings, parents, and other relatives as conduits to loot public funds.

This turns the spotlight on the family unit, as the foundation of values in society.
