Earthquake; Kenya experiences earth tremors

A slight Earthquake and tremors have been reported in various parts of the country as Kenyans share experiences online on X.

The earthquake is however unconfirmed with state agencies probing to establish details of the occurrence.

According to global quake tracking agency Volcano Discovery, an unconfirmed tremor has been registered in Kenya at around 8:31 GMT.

Earlier in the evening a notable earth tremor hit different parts of the country with Kenyans getting online to exchange views. 

From what TV47 has gathered and according to Volcano Discovery, the earthquake epicenter was 15kms NNW of Magadi and registered 4.6 on the Richter scale.

How many felt the Earthquake in Kenya?

According to Volcano, a strong magnitude 4.6 earthquake hit 87 km (54 mi) away from Nairobi, Kenya. This took place on the evening of Tuesday, Jul 16, 2024, at 8.32 pm local time.

Additionally, the quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was felt widely in the area.

Consequently, the shallow depth of the quake, caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

The tremors were non-destructive

Additional information from Volcano shows that, based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter.

These parts around the epicenter include areas within Kajiado County, Insinya, and Narok at varying magnitudes from the Magadi area border.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Kajiado (pop. 11,200) located 67 km from the epicenter, and Ngong (pop. 9,500) 78 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kikuyu Narok, Nairobi, Limuru, and Athi River.

Kenyans react to the tremors on X

Kenyans have gone online to confirm if the earth tremors were an actuality with some sharing their views on the tremors.

One user named Cornelius Ronoh shared that the experienced earthquake in the country was courtesy of the Gen Z’s.

Comedian and content creator Njuguna was at the forefront reacting to the non-destructive tremor with a skit.
