EDITORIAL: Proper leadership is required to address the education funding mess

National NewsNews

Our attention has been drawn to the plight of bright but needy KCPE students who are unable to continue with their education due to poverty.

The latest data from the Ministry of Education reveals that over 130,000 students who sat for the KCPE exam in 2023 are yet to enroll in secondary school.

In a nation that prides itself on high literacy levels and a constitution that guarantees every child the right to basic and compulsory education, this situation raises questions about whether we are regressing from this promise for all.

The fundamental principle of education as an equalizer in society should be upheld, ensuring that it is both accessible and affordable for all, regardless of socio-economic background.

The current state of affairs prompts reflection on the attention and resources devoted to the education sector.

While the government is actively pursuing initiatives like affordable housing and universal health care, the enthusiasm and commitment to education seem to be lagging behind.

There is need for proper leadership and accountability in addressing the challenges faced by bright but needy students.

It is essential to establish standardized processes that can be objectively assessed, thereby preventing the arbitrary distribution of scholarships and bursaries administered by politicians.

With the right leadership, there is a potential for collaboration with the private sector, which could play a crucial role in bridging the financial gap and providing assistance to ensure that all deserving students have access to education.

Education is not merely another sector; it is a fundamental right and a cornerstone for the development of individuals and the nation as a whole.

It is our responsibility as a society to develop solutions that ensure no child is locked out of class due to lack of funds.
