The recent viral video showing a mob of boda boda operators in Kitengela engaging in a violent attack on a motorist has ignited concerns about the unchecked aggression displayed by members of this group.
The incident, purportedly in response to a traffic violation, is just part of a disturbing trend where boda boda operators seem to act as judge, jury, and executioner on the streets.
One cannot help but wonder who granted these bodaboda operators the authority to pass final judgment on the alleged hit and run incident.
The attempted murder of the motorist in broad daylight raises serious concerns about the blatant disregard for the law, public safety, and human life.
The audacity to take such drastic measures in the presence of both the public and the police is a disturbing signal of a growing culture of impunity.
Yet this is not the first such incident. We are reminded of the infamous ‘beast of Forest Road,’ case a few years ago where a similar group attacked and violated a female motorist.
It is a clear pattern where bodaboda operators perceive themselves as a law unto themselves, especially in their interactions with motorists.
Are we inadvertently fostering a culture where a specific group believes it can openly defy the laws governing the wider society?
Law enforcement agencies must swiftly investigate and prosecute those involved in the Kitengela incident to send a strong message that mob justice will not be tolerated.
The rule of law must prevail, and individuals who take it upon themselves to mete out justice violently must be held accountable.
It is a collective responsibility to ensure that our roads are safe for everyone, and no one should be above the law.
