Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has issued a list of directives ahead of reopening of schools on Monday, May 6.
CS Machogu issued the directives in a circular addressed to county and sub-County education directors and copied to Education PS Belio Kipsang and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.
On the reopening day, parents are advised to ensure their children arrive in school safely amid the heavy rains and paralysed transport along various roads and highways.
CS Machogu acknowledged that schools hosting displaced persons would not be able to resume regular learning immediately. He however directed National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to identify alternative accomodation facilities for learning to resume in the schools.
Following destruction of infrastructure and property in some schools due to flooding, field education officers have been directed to take up certain mitigation measures.
These include;
- Resource-sharing among neighbouring schools
- Use of multi-grade and multi-shift model of providing education (where applicable).
- Where it is impossible to continue learning in most severely affected institutions, Boards of Management (BOMs) are advised to temporarily keep the schools closed until the situation improves.
Owing to the high risk of waterborne diseases after damage of sanitation facilities, Education CS Machogu advised teachers and students to refrain from such buildings.
On the school reopening date, schools heads will be required to note down the number of learners who fail to report due to; paralysed transport system, effects of floods on the families livelihoods and displaced families due to floods.
