Acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli on Tuesday, August 20 interdicted eight officers from the National Police Service after 13 suspects, including Kware killings prime suspect Collins Jumaisi, escaped from Gigiri Police Station.
Speaking to the press, Masengeli said Gigiri Sub-County Commander, Officer Commanding Station and report officers are currently in custody to help in investigations.
Masengeli, who was flanked by Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin and Kenya Police Service Deputy Inspector General Eliud Langat, described the Tuesday morning incident as an “inside job”.
The nation woke up to shocking news that Jumaisi, who police say had confessed to killing at least six women, before dumping their mutilated bodies at Kware dumpsite in Embakasi South, was among those who escaped from Gigiri Police Station.
The 12 others, police say, are Eritreans detained at the station for being in the country illegally.
A report — filed at the station by police officers Evans Kirui and Gerald Mutuku who were manning the cells — says the incident occurred at around 3 am.
Kirui and Mutuku say that they were making their routine visit to the cells to serve breakfast to the suspects when they realised that they were nowhere to be seen.
They discovered that the 13 suspects had escaped by cutting the wire mesh at the basking bay.
Masengeli says that investigations have been launched in earnest.
