The Athletics Kenya (AK) National Cross Country Championships will serve as a crucial test for athletes preparing for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei confirmed that the championships, scheduled for February 8 at Eldoret Sports Club, will be a key part of Kenya’s Road to Tokyo campaign.
“This event is a stepping stone to ensure our athletes are well-prepared to qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo. But before that, we have the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing next month, followed by the World Relays in May and the Africa U20 & U18 Championships in Algeria,” Tuwei said after inspecting the course on Thursday, February 6.
Athletics Kenya Weekend Meetings to Follow
After the national cross country event, AK will shift its focus to track and field competitions. The first leg of the AK Weekend Meetings is set for February 15 at Mumias Sports Complex.
“After this, we move directly to track and field because we only have one cross country event, the Sirikwa Cross Country, as part of our Road to Tokyo. I urge our athletes and coaches to prepare thoroughly to meet qualification standards before trials. Everyone deserves an equal opportunity,” added Tuwei.
Cross Country Course Ready for Action
Tuwei expressed satisfaction with the technical preparations ahead of the championships.
“I inspected the course, and I’m pleased with the work done by our technical officials. Everything is in place and meets the required standards,” he noted.
Teams Arriving in Eldoret for the Championships
The Coast region was the first team to arrive in Eldoret for the championships. With 12 regions, four affiliates, and four new entries, all teams were expected to arrive by Thursday to acclimatize and familiarize themselves with the course.
“This is a major competition, and teams must be well-trained and ready to compete. The prize money has been increased, which is a great motivation. Athletes will put in their best effort both individually and as a team,” Tuwei added.
