In what was to be a way to build a better life, the residents of Eldoret found themselves ensnared in a devastating forex trade scam that has left many in dire financial straits.
Frustration among victims is mounting, with many accusing law enforcement of inadequate responses, as almost a week later the suspect is yet to be apprehended.
Acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli has, however, reassured the community, stating, “The investigation is very active, and once it is completed, those who are culpable will be brought to justice.”
He emphasized that a comprehensive investigation is underway to address the fraudulent activities that have reportedly cost victims millions of shillings.
Among the many affected is Bishop Caleb Mwania of Dominion Church, who has recently shared his harrowing experience with the authorities. He expressed disbelief at the betrayal by Ambrose Makech Abuti, the alleged mastermind behind the scheme.
“He used to play music in the church. I never anticipated he would betray us like this,” Mwania remarked, in an interview with Citizen TV.
The bishop revealed that his church lost KSh4 million due to the failed investments, and his family has also suffered significant losses.
“My wife invested KSh1.4 million into this scheme, and now we are struggling to manage the debts that have piled up,” he lamented.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Abuti remains elusive, having reportedly switched off his phone and evaded capture.
In light of the crisis, Uasin Gishu County Governor John Bii has urged residents to exercise caution when considering investment opportunities.
“This issue has really affected us; just look at all these people here. We are hospitable and we welcome all businessmen to Uasin Gishu but there are con artists and swindlers taking advantage of our hospitality,” he cautioned.
As the investigation continues, the community hopes for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore faith in local investment practices.
