The Eldoret High Court has found Jackton Odhiambo guilty of murdering Edwin Kiptoo, famously known as Chiloba.
While making the ruling on Wednesday, Justice Reuben Nyakundi stated that the prosecution successfully proved its case against Odhiambo, painting a compelling picture of his involvement in the death of Chiloba.
The court relied on a combination of scientific evidence, directive evidence, and testimonies from witnesses that firmly linked Odhiambo to the heinous act.
Key pieces of evidence included forensic findings, corroborated timelines, and witness accounts that placed Odhiambo at critical points leading up to Chiloba’s tragic demise.
On Wednesday, Justice Nyakundi ruled that the prosecution had proven Odhiambo suffocated Chiloba with the help of his brother and cousin, placed the body in a metal box before dumping it along a roadside.
However, Odhiambo denied any involvement in his housemate’s murder, despite DNA samples linking him to the victim’s body and witnesses testifying about a heated argument between the two, as well as seeing Odhiambo transport the metal box.
DNA evidence revealed that the two shared an intimate physical relationship, but the court did not establish the motive for the killing.
Chiloba, a prominent LGBTQ+ activist and fashion designer, was found dead in January 2024, sparking outrage and calls for justice nationwide.
His death not only underscored the issue of violence in the community but also brought renewed focus to the need for accountability in such crimes.
The sentencing, scheduled for December 16, 2024, will determine the final chapter of this case, with many hoping it sets a precedent for justice in similar incidents.
