Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich has launched the House of Coaches in Iten, an initiative aimed at improving coaching standards in Kenya. The program, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Elgeyo Marakwet County, and the City of Miramas in France, seeks to address the country’s coaching deficit and enhance sports development.
Under the initiative, 12 coaches will undergo training both locally and in France, with nine specializing in athletics and three in taekwondo, cycling, and strength training. Governor Rotich emphasized the importance of high-level coaching, stating, “We must develop world-class trainers to produce future champions.”
Gender Inclusion in Coaching
Of the 12 selected coaches, eight are women, a move that aims to bridge the gender gap in coaching. Claudie Durand, representing Miramas, highlighted the significance of the program in promoting gender equality in sports leadership. “This program ensures more women excel at the highest level,” she said.
Broadening Kenya’s Sporting Expertise
Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei welcomed the initiative, noting that investing in coaching will diversify Kenya’s sports dominance beyond athletics. “This strengthens Kenya’s global competitiveness,” he stated.
The House of Coaches will also focus on sports medicine and athlete welfare, ensuring long-term sustainability for Kenyan athletes. As the program kicks off, it is expected to not only nurture top-tier coaches but also solidify Kenya’s reputation as a global sporting powerhouse.
