As Kipchoge, the indomitable force, geared up for his triumphant return to the Tokyo Marathon, memories of Kiptum lingered, a bitter reminder of life’s fragility.

There were dreams unfulfilled,” he solemnly acknowledged, his eyes reflecting a mix of determination and sorrow.

With the looming specter of the July 2024 Olympics, Kipchoge, ever the visionary, confessed to the void left by Kiptum’s absence.

Among them, Chicago women’s champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who is also competing in Tokyo.

Sifan Hassan, a star in her own right, paid homage to Kiptum’s spirit, grappling with the harsh reality of his untimely departure.

His spirit lives on, but the pain lingers,” her words a moving tribute to a life cut short.

Hassan, who won in Chicago in the second-fastest women’s time in history, said she was “heartbroken” by Kiptum’s death.

“When he broke the world record in Chicago I shared it with him,” she said.

He was so young and he was showing the world what was possible. It’s very hard.”
