Eliud Kipchoge finishes sixth in men’s London Marathon while Sabastian Sawe wins

Eliud Kipchoge, the marathon legend, finished 6th in the 2025 London Marathon, running a time of 2:05:25. While this is still a strong performance for many, it’s clear that Kipchoge is no longer the force he once was.

Sebastien Sawe took the top spot, finishing with an impressive 2:02:27. Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda came in third with a time 2:03:37 and Kenya’s Alexander Munyao finished fourth clocking 2:04:20.

In one of the biggest races this year, the London marathon was graced by over 56,000 runners, including renowned international celebrities.

The two-time Olympic marathon champion, Kipchoge seems to be slowing down, and this time, his race wasn’t the flawless performance fans are used to. Though he finished first in the masters division, he couldn’t break the masters world record set by Kenenisa Bekele last year. Despite showing some promise early in the race, Kipchoge couldn’t keep up with the fast pace set by Sawe and the others.

This result follows a rough year for Kipchoge, who struggled in the 2024 Tokyo Marathon and had to drop out of the Paris Olympics due to injury. While his finish in London was a step forward, it’s clear the marathon world is evolving, and the future may belong to younger runners like Sawe.

Next, Kipchoge is set to race in the Sydney Marathon in August, but with the competition getting stronger, it remains to be seen if he can still compete at the top level.

While running a professional marathon at 40 is an impressive feat, Kipchoge is not the oldest professional marathoner to grace the London Marathon.

Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa claimed victory at the 2025 London Marathon in the women`s category, finishing with a time of 2:15:50. Not only did she take the win, but she also set a new women’s only world record, beating the previous mark by a significant margin.
