SpaceX’s ambitious Starship rocket met a fiery fate once again, as it exploded mid-flight during a highly anticipated test launch.
The spacecraft, designed to carry astronauts to the Moon and eventually Mars lost control just minutes after takeoff, scattering debris across the sky and forcing flight disruptions in Florida.
The towering 403-foot rocket lifted off from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, at around 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
However, just moments later, contact was lost.
The spacecraft, which was supposed to execute a controlled descent over the Indian Ocean, instead spiraled out of control.
Flames and debris lit up the skies, with witnesses from Florida to the Caribbean capturing the fiery spectacle.
SpaceX confirmed the incident, referring to it as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly.”
The company assured the public that safety protocols were immediately implemented, and an investigation is underway to determine the root cause.
Despite the setback, SpaceX emphasized that failure is a stepping stone to success, stating that every test flight offers valuable lessons to improve Starship’s reliability.
While the rocket met an unfortunate end, the mission did see one success.
The Super Heavy booster executed a flawless return to the launch pad, a significant milestone in SpaceX’s goal of reusability.
A Spectacle in the Sky
Among those watching the launch was Bret Bostwick, a biotechnology consultant enjoying the moment with his young sons near Ragged Island in the Bahamas.
“I was watching with my boys, seven and nine years old, and then, all of a sudden—boom!
It just turned into a big ball of fire,” he recalled.
“There wasn’t actually a boom at that point, just a massive fireball.”
He described the aftermath as resembling a “big firework show,” with different fragments glowing in various colours as they rained down.
Having witnessed previous Starship failures, he and his children quickly recognized the pattern.
“Hopefully, they’ll learn from this, and it’ll go a little further next time,” he added with a hopeful smile.
The explosion prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a temporary flight restriction across multiple Florida airports, delaying departures at major hubs such as Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale.
Although operations have since resumed, SpaceX now faces yet another investigation into the failed launch.
This latest setback follows a previous Starship test in January, which ended in a similar fiery demise.
Despite these challenges, SpaceX remains undeterred, with Elon Musk reaffirming the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of space exploration.
