Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a notorious sim swap fraudster in Nairobi.

According to a report from the DCI, Emmanuel Kiprono was arrested after he was found presenting himself to a Safaricom shop for sim replacement services using a forged identity card and a fake police abstract.

“Upon interrogation, Emmanuel Kiprono led detectives to a house in Zimmerman where a mobile phone used for sim registration, assorted sim replacement cards, and forged police abstract forms were recovered,” read part of the DCI statement.

Mobile money registration booklets, waiting ID cards, and several IDs were also recovered during the incident. 

His arrest follows a similar one where his accomplice in crime  Everline Alulu Kimani was arrested on September 19, 2023.

“She was also arrested after presenting herself to a mobile service provider shop while seeking similar services as those of Kiprono using forged documents with the sole intention of stealing from her victims’ mobile money wallets,” DCI reported.

Papers bearing confidential Safaricom customer information were recovered from her house in Komarock-Nairobi during the arrest. 

According to the DCI, Kiprono, and Alulu are part of the infamous Mulot team that targets individuals with large mobile money balances.  They usually take over the phone numbers of their targets and with the help of forged documents, they transfer all the money from their accounts.

The DCI has urged all Kenyans to be more alert and report any suspicious individuals to the police.

In addition, operators of mobile money shops have been advised to be more keen in handling their clients to identify those using fake documents.
