One more person has succumbed to injuries sustained during the Embakasi gas explosion, bringing the death toll from the tragedy to seven.
The government says that it is pursuing justice for the victims of the February 1 tragedy, reporting substantial progress in the ongoing investigations.
Four suspects were on Tuesday, February 6 arraigned before the Milimani Chief Magistrate and charged with murder under sections 203 and 204 of the penal code.
The suspects, namely Derick Kimathi Nyamu, David Ongare, Miriam Kioko, and Joseph Makau, are currently detained at Capitol Hill Police Station.
A ruling on their custodial application is scheduled for today (February 7, 2024) at 2:00 pm.
Additionally, Linet Cheruiyot was presented by her advocate and is now in police custody at Embakasi Police cells. She is set to be arraigned in Makadara Court today for custodial orders.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura says that all victims who were sheltered at the Embakasi Social Hall have either been re-integrated into the community or provided with alternative accommodation.
“The government continues to offer extensive support, including both food and non-food items, to assist these individuals and families in rebuilding their lives and returning to normalcy,” Mwaura says.
He adds: “The government’s relief efforts extend beyond immediate shelter needs, focusing also on long-term support for the affected families. This comprehensive approach is indicative of the government’s dedication to ensuring that all those impacted by the tragedy are cared for and supported during their time of need.”
The government is also encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal gas filling stations through the number 020 3313004, to prevent such incidents in the future.
