Angry residents of Embu town took to the streets in protest, demanding the immediate release of Billy Mwangi, a 24-year-old man abducted by unknown assailants on Saturday.
The demonstrators lit fires, blocked major roads, and brought businesses to a standstill for hours as they voiced their frustrations over the authorities’ inaction.
Led by Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, the residents issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police, demanding Mwangi’s safe return.
Mukunji accused the police of failing to act decisively and hinted at possible complicity in the young man’s disappearance.
“It’s unacceptable that six days later, there’s still no trace of Billy.
The police must step up and ensure he’s safely reunited with his family,” Mukunji declared.
Embu West OCPD Zachary Omae stated that the police, in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), are working tirelessly to trace Mwangi.
However, Omae admitted that no arrests have been made so far.
Mwangi’s family recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that he was forcefully taken from a barber shop by four armed, masked men.
The assailants, driving a double-cabin pickup, sped off towards the Embu-Nairobi Highway, leaving behind a trail of fear and confusion.
Since the abduction, Mwangi’s family has combed through Embu County in search of answers, but every effort has been in vain.
Their distress grows with each passing day.
Speculation surrounding the motive for Mwangi’s abduction points to a social media post he allegedly made on X (formerly Twitter).
The post, featuring an AI-generated image that portrayed President Ruto in a negative light, is believed to have made him a target.
As tensions continue to rise, the family remains hopeful that Mwangi will return home safely.
The protests in Embu have amplified their plea, putting immense pressure on authorities to deliver answers and justice.
The nation watches closely, as Mwangi’s case becomes yet another chilling reminder of the growing concerns over freedom of expression and personal safety in Kenya.
