In what is the end of a truly legendary era of English football, Leicester City skipper Jamie Vardy will leave the club at the end of the 2024–25 season, the Foxes have confirmed.
The 38-year-old striker, who rose from non-league Unrecognition to Premier League superstardom, departs as one of the greatest of all time in Leicester’s history.
Vardy’s story is nothing short of legend. Snapped up from Fleetwood Town in 2012, the Sheffield-born forward defied the odds to become Leicester’s all-time Premier League goal-scorer.
In total, he has scored 198 times in 498 appearances for the club — a record which has cemented his status among the game’s legends.
The most iconic season of his career came in 2015–16, during which he netted 24 Premier League goals to help Leicester win their first-ever top-flight title in a fairy-tale campaign that captivated fans around the world and ranks as one of the greatest sporting shocks in recent football history.
In addition to the Premier League title, Vardy also played a key role in Leicester’s 2021 FA Cup victory , a first for the club ,when they beat Chelsea 1–0 in a pulsating final at Wembley.
Reacting to his departure in an emotional video released by Leicester on social media, Vardy said: “To the Leicester fans, I’m heartbroken that this day is coming, but I knew it was going to come sooner or later. I’ve had 13 amazing years at this football club, with plenty of success, and some downs, but the majority of them all highs.”. It’s time to finally call it a day, which I’m devastated about, but I think the time is right.”
Vardy is the last remaining member of the club’s title-winning team of 2016 still at the King Power Stadium.
Even after Leicester’s relegation in 2023, he remained loyal to the club and played a central role in their immediate promotion back to the Premier League last season.
In this campaign, Vardy has scored seven goals in 30 league appearances. Leicester’s season, however, has been one to forget for all the wrong reasons.
The club are 19th in the Premier League under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy with just 18 points from 33 games. Vardy labelled the season “miserable” and a “total embarrassment” after relegation was confirmed for a second time earlier this month.
As he prepares to bid his farewells, Vardy is not just leaving a legacy, but an inspiration ,a shining light of belief, determination, and what it means to dream big.
