Manchester United emerged victorious in an eventful 4-2 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.
The Reds were looking to return to winning ways in the league, having gone four games without taking all three points, but it was not to be an ideal start when Jayden Bogle seized the ball high up the field and opened the scoring for the visitors.
The reply came quickly via a perfectly weighted Harry Maguire glancing header on the end of an Alejandro Garnacho cross, to even things up, as the sides headed back to the dressing rooms at the break.
It was a similar story in the second half when the Blades drew the first blood once more, this time through a powerful close-range Ben Brereton Diaz finish.
A rapid response came once again, courtesy of captain Bruno Fernandes from the spot. That was only the start for the Portugal international, popping up once again inside the final 10 minutes to provide us with the lead for the first time, before turning provider as Rasmus Hojlund ensured maximum points for United.
Meanwhile, Liverpool was beaten in the 244th Merseyside derby, The Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Everton in Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at Goodison Park.
An eventful first 45 minutes saw the home side have a spot-kick awarded and retracted before Jarrad Branthwaite forced in an opener after pinball inside the Reds box.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed in a second for the Blues. While the visitors had chances – including Luis Diaz striking the woodwork – Jürgen Klopp’s final Merseyside derby ended with a loss.
“No good thoughts at all. Very disappointed, and frustrated obviously. I had now obviously a few interviews and I would say you can sum up: it was not good enough. We played the game, or let it happen, the game Everton wanted.
“They scored two goals from set pieces. In the first one, we defended somehow three times but in the end, we put it on a plate and I don’t think Branthwaite scored it, he didn’t even hit the ball properly but the ball rolled over the line.
“After that, we had our best period, we put them under pressure, we created big chances and didn’t score. Going like that at half-time, each situation we missed gave Everton kind of momentum even more and took away from us. We never had it, but it didn’t help.” stated Jürgen Klopp in the post-match conference.
