In response to a scandal involving leaked private videos, the government of Equatorial Guinea has announced a crackdown on sexual conduct within its offices.
The decision comes after footage surfaced on social media, allegedly showing a senior Finance Ministry official engaged in sexual acts with multiple women in various locations, including his office.
The government’s swift action aims to address the damage to the country’s reputation resulting from these revelations.
Equatorial Guinea, a small Central African nation ruled by President Teodoro Obiang for 45 years, has faced increased scrutiny amid this unfolding scandal.
Local media reports indicate that a raid at the finance official’s residence uncovered hundreds of amateur videos, some featuring women identified as wives of influential government figures and family members. The authenticity of these videos has not been verified by Reuters.
On Tuesday, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue announced new measures intended to curb illicit behavior among judiciary and ministry officials. These measures include the installation of security cameras in all government offices and heightened security protocols.
“The executive is taking this decision following the videos of a sexual nature that have gone viral on social media in recent days and that denigrate the country’s image,” the state information agency stated.
The announcement followed emergency meetings with the Supreme Court and the attorney general, among other officials.
While the government has not disclosed the names of individuals appearing in the videos, it has stated that those involved will be suspended.
Additionally, security personnel responsible for monitoring the buildings where the videos were allegedly filmed will face disciplinary actions for neglecting their duties.
As Equatorial Guinea grapples with this scandal, President Obiang’s long-standing rule continues to be tested by internal and external pressures regarding governance and public accountability.
