Kenyan comedian and activist Eric Omondi has launched a signature collection campaign to push for a referendum.
The former Churchill Show star is advocating for a reduction in the number of counties and the elimination of certain political positions, including senators, women representatives, nominated MPs, and nominated MCAs.
Omondi argues that Kenya is excessively represented, with too many leaders serving in overlapping roles.
Speaking during a press briefing, on Tuesday August 20, 2024 in Nairobi, he mentioned that, “A single Kenyan is represented by 16 officials doing the same job, from the president to the village elder.”
He also announced plans to travel across the country to gather a million signatures, which he expects to collect in less than two weeks.
Omondi also drew comparisons between Kenya and the United States, highlighting that the U.S., despite having a larger population, has fewer government officials.
According to the comedian, over-representation of citizens has placed a heavy financial burden on taxpayers.
For instance, he pointed out the redundancy of having similar offices at both the national and county levels in the country.
He also explained that even though devolution was intended to bring services closer to the people, it has not fulfilled its promise.
