Ethiopia is set to become the 9th member state of East Africa Community (EAC), Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of EAC, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development Peninah Malonza has disclosed.
This comes just a few months after Somalia’s admission to the regional bloc.
Speaking during a relief food distribution exercise in Mulutu, Kitui Central, CS Malonza also said that there are plans to have one currency across all East African Countries.
“Nataka kuwahakikishia kuwa Ehtiopia itajiunga na EAC baada ya Somalia. Vile vile tuko kwenye mazungumzo na Eritrea na nchi zote za Horn of Africa, na tunajua kwamba watajiunga. Nchi nyingi zikijiunga na EAC tutakuwa na usemi sana,” CS Malonza said.
The EAC is a regional intergovernmental organisation of eight (8) Partner States, comprising the Republic of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Federal Republic of Somalia, Republic of South Sudan, Republic of Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Federal Republic of Somalia was admitted into the EAC bloc on 24th November, 2023 and became a full member on 4th March, 2024.
