Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay delivered a stunning performance in Eugene, Oregon, shattering Faith Kipyegon’s 5,000m world record with a remarkable time of 14:00.21 to secure the Diamond Trophy on Sunday.

A mere three months after Kipyegon established a new global benchmark in Paris, the 26-year-old Tsegay set a fresh record, slicing just over five seconds off the previous mark.

Kipyegon had clocked 14:05.20 in Paris on June 9, setting the stage for Tsegay to seize the title with an electrifying run in Eugene.

Tsegay holds her ground

Displaying her determination, the Ethiopian surged ahead of the pack with more than five laps remaining.

Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, last season’s Diamond Trophy champion, kept pace, biding her time for an opportunity to make her move and defend her title.

However, Tsegay held her ground against the mounting pressure.

As they approached the final two laps, Tsegay widened the gap between herself and Chebet, striding resolutely towards the record.

As the bell rang, it was evident that she was poised to break the record, with her new goal being to become the first woman to run under 14 minutes.

Tsegay blazed down the track, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd at Hayward Field, narrowly missing the historic sub-14-minute mark but setting a new world record in the process.

Chebet secured second place, just shy of the previous world record, achieving a new personal best time of 14:05.92.

Meanwhile, Lilian Kasait trailed in fourth place with a time of 14:40.81.

Faith Kipyegon clinched the women’s 1500M Diamond League title with a lightning-fast time of 3:50:72, etching her name as the fifth fastest ever.

This phenomenal athlete often hailed as the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time), stamped her dominance with a triumphant third consecutive victory at the Prefontaine Classic.
