The penalty handed to Everton for violating Premier League financial regulations has been diminished from 10 points to six following an appeal process.
Initially, the club had incurred a 10-point deduction in November for contravening profit and sustainability rules (PSRs) during the three-year period leading up to 2021-22.
“Everton FC appealed the sanction imposed against it on nine grounds. Two of those nine grounds were upheld by the Appeal Board, which has substituted the original points deduction of 10 for six,” a Premier League statement said.
According to a statement from the Premier League, Everton FC contested the imposed sanction on nine specific grounds, all pertaining to the severity of the penalty rather than disputing the breach itself, which the club acknowledged.
This penalty, deemed the largest in Premier League history, precipitated Everton’s descent from 14th to 19th place in the league standings. However, with the reduction of the deduction, Everton’s position has ascended from 17th to 15th.
“The club is also particularly pleased with the appeal board’s decision to overturn the original commission’s finding that the club failed to act in utmost good faith. The club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal,” Everton said in a statement.

The appeal board deliberated on the nine grounds raised by Everton and found merit in two of them. Consequently, the appeal board opted to substitute the original 10-point deduction with a reduced penalty of six points.
The board’s decision was influenced by their determination that the initial ruling by the independent commission in November 2023 had committed legal errors on two specific points.
