Everton has been deducted two more point for breaching the Premier League‘s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2022-23 season.
The Toffees have dropped to the 16th in the league with 27 points, just two points and two places above relegation zone.
The club which was slapped with 10 points deduction in November 2023 – later reduced to 6 after appeal – has now one week to appeal the decision.
PSR permit clubs to lose £105m over three years and an independent commission found Everton breached that by £16.6m for the three-year period to 2022-23.
The club suffered multiple financial setbacks including the loss of sponsorship from USM Services due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the fact they admitted breach at the first opportunity.
“While the club’s position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the club is pleased to see that the commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the club, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co-operation and early admission of the club’s breach,” Everton club statement reads.
They are the second club to be hit with points deduction after Nottingham Forest was docked four points in March this year, although they have lodged an appeal.
