Former Brazil forward Romario has announced his return to football at the age of 58, declaring his intention to register as a player for America Football Club, as he aims to play alongside his son at the club.
Currently serving as the president of America Football Club, Romario’s decision to register as a player has been approved by Rio de Janeiro’s football federation.
The 58-year-old, who famously led Brazil to victory in the 1994 World Cup, clarified that he does not intend to play competitive football. Instead, he plans to participate in a few matches alongside his son, Romarinho, who recently joined America FC.
In an Instagram post, Romario stated, “I’m not going to compete in the championship, but rather play a few games for the team of my heart and make another dream come true, playing alongside my son.”
Romario’s illustrious career spanned 24 years, with notable stints at Vasco de Gama, in the Netherlands, and Barcelona in Spain. He also played for the likes of PSV Eindhoven, and Flamengo.
He earned acclaim for his prolific goal-scoring, tallying 55 goals in 70 games for Brazil. In 1994, he was named Fifa Player of the Year after contributing five goals to Brazil’s World Cup triumph.
Romario will receive a minimum wage which he will donate back to the club. He has served as their president since his retirement in 2009 and was elected as a senator for Rio de Janeiro in 2014.
