Ex-CJ Mutunga to accompany three activists to DCI for fear of abductions

Former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga will today (Monday, June 24) accompany three activists to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Dr. Mutunga said that the three — Hanifa Adan, Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid and Boniface Mwangi — have been in hiding for fear of being abducted by authorities in connection to the ongoing protests against the Finance Bill, 2024.

“Tomorrow at 11 am I shall accompany Hanifa Adan, Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid and Boniface Mwangi to DCI_Kenya HQs on Kiambu Road. Mwangi was almost abducted outside the City Mortuary by DCI on Friday contrary to Art. 238(2)(b) of the Constitution. Join us in solidarity,” Dr. Mutunga said.

This comes amid cases of abductions of people who have been vocal and advocating for the ongoing protests against the contentious bill.

More than 60,000 Kenyans joined an X Space titled “Good Morning Kenya: Where is Crazy Nairobian?” on Saturday, June 22, to call for the release of social media influencer Billy Simani.

Simani would be released on Sunday, June 23 around 10:00 PM with assistance from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

Dr. Austin Omondi, known on X as Japrado, was also abducted on Sunday along Forest Road while overseeing a blood donation drive at Sikh Union Club Chandaria. This is part of the help offered to protesters under the ‘Medics for Kenya’ initiative.

After a public outcry — led by Kenyans at large, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) — the doctor was released.

On Sunday night, Shad Khalif, who has also been vocal online agaist the Bill, was abducted by unknown persons from Sanasana in South B. His whereabouts remain unknown.
